Wiser Capital Raises the Roof with GRID Alternatives

As a proud member of 1% for the Planet, Wiser Capital put its donation dollars to work this past July by supporting GRID Alternatives’ Solar Affordable Housing Program. Grid Alternatives has a track record for bringing renewable energy to low-income families across the United States, lighting up villages in Nicaragua, partnering with Tribal communities in California, and supporting careers for women in the solar industry. GRID Alternatives is truly pushing the envelope, making them an ideal beneficiary of Wiser Capital’s donation to 1% For the Planet.

With the support of GRID Alternatives, the Wiser Capital team took business to the roof, installing 1.82 kW of solar infrastructure on a low-income residential building in Santa Maria, CA. This experience not only allowed Wiser Capital to strengthen their social and environmental mission, but granted the team a chance to experience first-hand what it is like to install a solar PV system. In support of an environmentally conscious non-profit, this partnership prevented 48 tons of carbon emissions while building morale and supporting community.

Although there were many hands-on-deck, the solar array installed for this small family in Santa Maria was particularly entertaining and educational for Alex Brotman, Account Services Generalist at Wiser Capital, who explained that,

“Experiencing firsthand the simplicity of solar power technology and the ease of installation was eye-opening. If people think that installing solar power is a massive undertaking, they would be surprised by how quick a solar array can be deployed. It took less than two working days to install the racking system, align the panels and set up the wiring. Working on the project was fun and educational!”

Working with GRID Alternatives proved to be a wonderful learning experience while providing renewable energy to a family in need. This project is projected to produce lifetime savings of $15,398 for the host family, producing an estimated 101,867 kWh. In addition to the 1% financial commitment, Wiser Capital is also committed to engaging partners in the 1% mission and goals. By moving beyond the traditional ‘environmental’ companies, Wiser Capital can open up new sources of funding and magnify positive impact through a network of financing, construction, and technology companies committed to empowering communities and the environment that supports them.
